Little Pink Dresser

You might be familiar with our Little Black Dresser, so here’s the newest version designed for a great cause: The Little Pink Dresser.

Judson is always looking for a great cause to be a part of. This year he decided to do a Little Pink Dresser as a donation piece for the Luxe Home Interiors Chair-Ity event with proceeds going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation-BC/Yukon Region.

The Dresser was showcased at the 2012 IDS West Show in Vancouver before making the trip to Victoria for this special event.

2010 Culture Crawl this Weekend!

There is no better time than the Crawl to see Jud’s studio than during the East Side Culture Crawl. The crawl, which has been a major fall event for 14 years, just continues to grow! As more studios join, the party here at Straightline just keeps getting bigger as well.

Come by on Friday night for drinks and snacks, or during the weekend and see current, in progress work on display. You take a look inside a curvy cabinet and see what is really going on in there! Past favorites will jostle for attention with bright new ideas and crazy prototypes. There will be things to draw on, open up, bounce, shake and unexpectedly discover. We’ll currently have pieces from our work with Crayola Crayon Canada, as well as several other clients  Don’t miss it!

We’ll have live music and other surprises by Kurt Beaumont, Taylor Beaumont, and Jud’s staff, who will also have artwork in the studio.

We’re unit #260 in 1000 Parker Street – 2nd floor.

Tokyo Design Week

Jud just got back from Tokyo Design Week – and it was a great show! He`s been working on some fold-out couches with Japanese couch company Shinohara. The pieces Jud designed will be going into production soon and were a great hit at the trade show. You can Check out the product site, J-Sofa, here: J-Sofa .

Jud`s sketches were translated into manufacturing sketches, and the first prototypes that were successful came along to the show!

Some new work from Judson`s shop also made a debut in the Japanese booth!

Meet Billy, the Boy-Cabinet:

And the wall of the booth was an event in itself! Jud brought chalk and over the course of the show an explosion of patchwork was carefully sketched out.

The booth:

IDS West

We had a great time meeting people at IDS West his year! The booth looked great and we had a load of people coming to look the new Sally Dresser! She was the perfect piece to feature, what with the show occurring so close to Halloween.

Judson's Tim Burton Tribute of the year

Jud also introduced his new “Quilted” Series! More of these will be appearing in his upcoming Japan show at 100% Design Tokyo. He will also be doing a presentation entitled “Environmental Design & Wood” featuring his work with Pine Beetle Wood.

"Stitched" Wood Table Top

Jud has been experimenting with how we can be more resourceful in making use of wood that would otherwise be thrown away. The effect of putting these small scraps together came out rather like a quilt. We’ll see where this route takes us!

New Ideas!

Fall is (believe it or not) coming up fast, and that means it’s time to start preparing work for numerous shows and events, including the IDS West Show here in Vancouver as several international shows.

It looks like there will be a whole new selection of work to see this year!

Tim Burton's Sally

Jud has been experimenting with patchwood: patchwork wood and unusual sewing experiments involving solid wood, plywoods and veneers – everything, really.

So far experiments are proceeding swimmingly.  Ever a Tim Burton fan, Sally from the Nightmare Before Christmas has become an inspiration for one piece in particular that Jud is working on: The Sally Dresser.

The Sally Dresser is based on the same frame as Judson’s Little Black Dresser, but with a twist!

Jud was also invited to attend the International Woodworking Fair with WoodLink USA in Atlanta this year.  IWF is a massive exposition of all things woodworking! It will run from Aug 25-28 this year, 8am-5pm.

He will also be doing a presentation at the World Expo in Shanghai. This will take place on the 27th of September at the Canadian Pavilion. Jud was invited along with Brent Comer to represent BC Wood.

Somewhere, somehow, there is a nude wooden ragdoll running around looking for this piece.

We were originally looking at both wire and leather as potential “sewing” materials, but wire seems to be the right decision. Here’s one sample board that worked out with the wire option:

The stain kind of hides the woodiness, but Jud has looked at the more natural options too. Take a look:

July 1! Salt Spring Woodwork’s Night Gallery

Save July 1st for the Summer Lights opening party and premiere of Salt Spring Woodwork’s Night Gallery!

Three extraordinary artists – Brent Comber, Judson Beaumont, and Peter Pierobon – will light up every Friday and Saturday night this summer from nine to midnight, with their innovative new light-filled installations and environments.

Judson Beaumont’s XL ‘Squiddies’ will be making their first appearance after their smaller cousins made a splash at the ICFF in New York just a few weeks ago. A Squiddy bench will be present, circling a tree, as 7 and 8 foot tall squiddies tower on their tentacles eerily lit from below. Best viewed at night!

The Squiddy Bench. Fancy a seat?

Summer Lights features illuminated works of  art in the environment, artifice in nature, pieces of public art made to be visible in the dark. Viewable from distances and infinite perspectives, they  illuminate the trails and the towering trees of the Woodworks landscape and transform it into a new place, startling, playful and beautiful.  Each piece changes and evolves through the day in different lights and times and weathers.

Salt Spring Woodworks is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm and  FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT  from  NINE TO MIDNIGHT through July and August.

Pine Beetle Heart Wall at EP!C Vancouver!

Our world-travelling Heart Wall, built for 100% Design in Tokyo last year, just recently featured in Ep!c Vancouver Exposition’s  fashion show.

Photo by Dusty Ranier of Createhive

The wall is made from split, sanded and stained pine beetle planks, the distinctive blue stain complementing the stone-like texture of the split wood.

These walls have been a huge hit! We love them because they really show off this really undervalued material that is unique to the Northwest, and our clients love the texture and beauty of the wood, and the versatility of its use as cladding. We’re currently working on a similar wall that will be heading to Regina, this time with the wood pieces running horizontally, where it will form part of  the waiting area in a Dentist’s office.

We’re always looking for new things to do with this cool wood, so check back often to see what we’ve come up with!

Squiddies at Night

Accomplished though they may be in looking creepy in daylight, these curious little tables really outdo themselves at night. Armed with LED pods, they transform into a starburst of leggy shadows.
